Effective Home Remedies for Conjunctivitis in toddlers

Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, in toddlers can be distressing, but gentle home remedies may help soothe symptoms and support healing, especially for mild infections not caused by serious pathogens. Here are some safe and commonly recommended options:

 Natural Remedies to Try

  • Breast Milk Drops

Rich in antibodies like Immunoglobulin A, breast milk may help fight infection. Apply 1–2 drops to the affected eye 2–3 times a day.

  • Warm Compress

Soak a clean cloth in warm water and gently place it over the closed eye for a few minutes. This helps reduce swelling and discharge.

  • Chamomile or Black Tea Bags

Steep the tea bag, let it cool, and place it over the eye for 10–15 minutes. The anti-inflammatory properties can ease irritation.

  • Raw Honey Solution

Mix raw honey with warm distilled water (1:1 ratio) and apply a drop to the eye using a sterile dropper. Honey has antibacterial and antiviral properties.

  • Aloe Vera Gel

Apply a tiny amount of pure aloe vera gel around the eye (not inside). It’s soothing and may reduce redness.

  • Saline Solution Rinse

Use a homemade saline rinse (boiled water + salt) to gently clean the eye and remove discharge.

Important Tips

  • Ensure you use sterile tools (such as droppers and cloths) and thoroughly wash your hands before and after administering treatment.

  • Administer remedies to both eyes to avoid spreading the infection, even if only one eye shows symptoms.

  • If symptoms do not improve or worsen after a few days, seek advice from a pediatrician. Some conditions, particularly bacterial or viral infections, might need medical intervention.
