The Boy Who Cried Wolf

The Boy's Funny Trick

Once upon a time, there was a young shepherd boy who spent his days watching over a flock of sheep on a grassy hill.

Most days were quiet.

The sheep munched on grass.

The birds sang cheerful songs.

The clouds floated slowly across the sky.

The boy soon became very bored.

"There has to be something more exciting to do," he sighed.

Then an idea popped into his head.

He took a deep breath and shouted as loudly as he could,

"Wolf! Wolf! Help! A wolf is chasing my sheep!"

The villagers dropped everything they were doing and ran up the hill to help.

But when they arrived, they found the sheep peacefully eating grass.

There was no wolf.

The boy burst into laughter.

"I fooled you!" he giggled.

The villagers frowned.

"That wasn't funny," one of them said. "You should never lie about something important."

The boy promised not to do it again.

But a few days later, he became bored once more.

So he shouted,

"Wolf! Wolf! Help!"

Again, the villagers rushed up the hill.

Again, there was no wolf.

The boy laughed even harder.

Some villagers shook their heads.

"If you keep telling lies," they warned, "people won't believe you when you really need help."

The boy only shrugged.

The Real Wolf

A few days later, something unexpected happened.

Out from the forest came a real wolf!

It growled and crept toward the flock.

The sheep scattered in every direction.

The boy's eyes grew wide.

This time, he wasn't pretending.

"Wolf! Wolf! Please help! There's really a wolf this time!"

He shouted until his voice became hoarse.

But the villagers remembered the tricks he had played.

"It's probably another joke," they said.

No one came.

The boy tried his best to scare the wolf away by waving his stick and making loud noises.

Eventually, the wolf ran back into the forest, but several sheep had wandered far away.

The boy felt terrible.

The Truth Matters

Later that day, the villagers climbed the hill to check on him.

The boy looked down sadly.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I lied so many times that no one believed me when I was telling the truth."

One of the villagers smiled kindly.

"Everyone makes mistakes," she said. "What's important is learning from them."

From that day on, the boy always told the truth.

Slowly, the villagers began to trust him again.

He also discovered that being honest made him feel much happier than playing tricks.

And whenever someone asked him why honesty mattered so much, he would smile and say,

"Trust takes a long time to build, but only a moment to lose."
